Frequently asked questions

General

What kind of services / solutions do you provide to the corporates?

We started off with digitization services such as data entry and data conversion. Over a period of time, we have added services such as content creation and validation, GIS based mapping services, transcription and localisation. In the current recessionary times, clients are choosing to consider our services for several of their back-end activities to save on costs. For detailed information on our services

What is your business model?

We follow a distributed operations model, whereby the Chennai office acts as the interface between the client and the rural centres. By working out of tier II towns and villages, the overheads are lower, the benefits of which are passed on to the client in form of lower costs. While the villages gain from the employment opportunities and the infrastructure, the client gets a cost advantage of up to 40% of their current costs. For more information on our business model

How many rural BPO centers do you have?

We currently have 6 delivery centres across Tamil Nadu at Chennai, Palladam, Salem, Appakoodal, Kollumangudi and Thirukkuvalai.

What keeps the team awake at night?

  • New things that will make our clients drop their jaws and say "We recommend DesiCrew!"
  • How to use technology to enable a distributed work atmosphere and connect more villages.
  • Best way to impart new skills to our team of first generation knowledge workers.
  • The fact that our team is only a few hundred people - and there are millions of unemployed youth who we can reach out to across India.
  • There is always room for improvement

What is the larger vision of the idea?

Our vision is to expand economic geographic boundaries by leveraging the local talent pool to provide a competitive advantage to customers. Our capacity in scalability, ability to work in multiple Indian languages, socially responsible mission, technological innovation, and remote management make it much more than an average rural BPO, rather a rurally-grounded innovative business that will continue to offer more services and serve more customers while producing wealth in the Indian rural economy. Social Impact

Has your initiative in rural areas had an impact on the 'overall' rural place itself (apart from the individual)? If so, how? Has this improved the living conditions of the rural town? If so, how?

Our journey has been too short for us to make such a claim, but it is where we want to go. We have made a start by being the first to take broadband connections to some of the villages in which we operate. As a majority of our workforce comprises of young women, parents are seeing the benefits of educating their daughters; traditionally many young rural women are primarily engaged in housework until marriage.

At DesiCrew, wealth is created and distributed within the local community. On a macro level, the rural BPO model has potential for greater impact given that approximately 70% of India's population resides in rural areas. If 50 people working in 1000 towns/ villages earn Rs 5,000 (~100 USD) per month - that is Rs 250 million (~5 million USD) per month being infused into local communities through local residents. On a comparative scale, average monthly household income of these employees would have been Rs 1,500 (~30 USD) per month. If this can be replicated across the country, we are talking about making a significant impact. For detailed information about our social impact.
