Drive-thru voice AI

Keeping one of the largest drive-thru voice AIs in the United States running smoothly since 2023

Most failures are fixed before the restaurant picks up the phone, so the drive-thru voice AI keeps taking orders. And when it does go down, the lane keeps moving anyway — a car still gets served and the sale still lands.

Kept through the pivot to voice AI

A drive-thru cannot pause. Cars are in the lane, the kitchen is waiting, and a failure shows up in seconds, not days. When the AI stops taking orders, DesiCrew has thirty minutes to bring it back — the average is fifteen. And when it does go down, the lane keeps moving anyway, so a car still gets served and the sale still lands. The drive-thru voice AI takes the order. DesiCrew keeps it taking orders.

Hi all,
I wanted to circle back here and show you the impact of the work done. Here is a breakdown of the volume of these tickets for the past 3 months.
  • April: 253 Orders Not Validating tickets and 217 HITL Audio Issue tickets
  • May: 217 Orders Not Validating tickets and 250 HITL Audio Issue tickets
  • June: 86 Orders Not Validating tickets and 66 HITL Audio Issue tickets
There is a 67% reduction in Support ticket volume. We really appreciate the DesiCrew team for bringing this analysis forward. I will continue to monitor this with the team to ensure numbers stay low and we work towards other solutions, but for now, this is a great milestone achievement.

01 — The Mandate

The platform is one of the largest drive-thru voice AIs in the United States. When a car pulls up, a voice takes the order, sends it to the kitchen screen, and offers a side to go with it. Keeping that system live, across every drive-thru and every hour, is DesiCrew.

Scale. 200 to 300 robots live today, on the way to 1,000 by the end of 2026. Coverage. Every critical failure, on every drive-thru, comes through DesiCrew first. Three lines of work. Break-fix when the AI or the hardware goes down or there is a break in the audio, accuracy when the order comes out wrong, and menu when an item, a price, or a promotion changes.

02 — The Challenge

A drive-thru fails in public. Cars stack up in a single lane, a customer cannot hear the speaker or the order comes back wrong, and within seconds the restaurant is losing sales it can watch leave. There is no backlog to hide behind and no overnight window to fix things in.

The stakes are immediate. A lane moves around 17 to 18 cars an hour, and the drive-thru is roughly three quarters of US fast-food sales. An hour dark at lunch is real revenue, gone and not coming back. The machine is hard to read. A single symptom — "the AI is not taking orders" — can sit in the model, the speech recognition, the speaker, the network, or the store's own setup. A customer says "coke" and the system writes "nope". The fluency is rare. It takes a working command of US restaurant operations, the POS, the kitchen screen, the menu board, American accents and slang, the hardware, and the AI stack, all at once.

Anatomy of one failure — why the drive-thru cannot just run itself

The ticket says what broke. It never says why. Whether the speaker died, the network dropped, or the AI misheard a regional accent — those are judgments made from a text message and an audio clip, not transcriptions. A person makes the call, and the lane is waiting while they do.

03 — The Approach

DesiCrew diagnoses fast, keeps the lane moving while it does, and builds its own tools for both.

Trained from zero. Before any technical detail, the team learns the restaurant — what a POS is, what a kitchen screen does, how a drive-thru actually works. DesiCrew built its own program for this, and a new analyst is handling critical tickets on their own within three to four weeks. Minimized downtime. Instant technical support via live phone assistance, with a first response inside five minutes of a ticket landing — contributing to over 95% uptime. Built their own tool. Session data used to arrive in a form that took too long to read; a DesiCrew agent built a tool that loads a session and surfaces the error, the speech-recognition score for each part of the order, and the audio health in a single view. Catches patterns before they spread. DesiCrew sees every drive-thru every day, so it spots what the core team cannot — one analyst traced a run of failures to a single POS type, flagged it with the evidence, and the fix cut errors at that store by 67%. Feeds the model. Every accuracy correction and menu fix goes back to the client's engineers as a signal. The support work is also training data — the longer DesiCrew runs it, the fewer mistakes the AI makes.

04 — The Outcome

The order gets taken, even when the AI cannot. Bypass keeps the lane moving through any failure, and most failures are resolved in about fifteen minutes, inside the thirty-minute SLA — so a customer still gets served, and the restaurant never watches a full lane drive away.

Failures caught before they are felt. Patterns are found and fixed across drive-thrus before they reach the phone, and outages are flagged before stores notice. A product that holds at scale. Around 3,000 tickets handled a month across 200 to 300 live robots, 75% resolved without escalation, uptime above 95% — so the client can put its AI in a new drive-thru and trust that the operation behind it will hold.

05 — Why the relationship holds

DesiCrew started with the client in 2023, on the tabletop product, with a handful of people. When the whole company turned towards drive-thru voice AI, DesiCrew moved with it. The team is 15 today, up from 5.

The scope has only grown. The company moved its escalation support from the US to DesiCrew as the work proved out, the menu team went from one person to three, and the tool DesiCrew built is becoming part of the client's own stack. It has held through every change on the company's side.
